I’ve been raising animals for a long time and have a lot of experience with sugar gliders, reptiles, and dart frogs. Right now, I really want to add another mammal species to my collection. I already have two pairs of sugar gliders, and I spend time with them after 7pm. I’m looking for an animal that is either crepuscular or diurnal and would bond well. I’ll do a lot of research before getting anything and I’m prepared to invest time and money into a proper setup. Any suggestions?
Honestly, I’d say get some rats. They’re amazing bonding pets and you can train them too, which is always fun. The only downside is their short lifespan, but if you’re okay with that, I’d recommend them!

I’ve actually had rats three different times, but the short lifespan (1.5 to 2 years) always gets to me.
I have woodchucks and I love them. I lost my female a week ago, and I miss her so much. I’m planning to get another female next year. Woodchucks are great companions for life. If you’re looking into prairie dogs, be cautious. Some are taken from burrows in a way that can cause serious injuries. Check out the ‘pd parents’ Facebook page, they have great advice on how to get one humanely.
Maybe a ferret? They’re cute and mischievous, but they’re very energetic. You’ll need to ferret-proof your house to keep them out of trouble.
I love my short-tailed opossum. She’s mostly nocturnal, but I can get her out by tempting her with superworms. She’s a great little companion.
I have a pet pigeon, super cute little guy! He’s an Old German Owl pigeon. There are a lot of pigeon breeds, and they all look very different. They’re easy to take care of, cheap, and don’t need any permits. You could get one or more if you want.
