I consider myself quite experienced with animals. I’ve raised sugar gliders for 10 years and currently have two pairs as pets. I’ve also worked with many reptiles, from prasina to sailing dragons, and I maintain 10 dart frog enclosures along with a reef aquarium. Now, I’m really interested in raising another mammal species. I spend a lot of time with my sugar gliders, but only after 7 pm. I’ve been considering getting a ferret or a small burrowing animal I heard about years ago, though I can’t recall its name. I’m looking for suggestions on a good bonding animal that’s either crepuscular or diurnal. I’ll definitely do thorough research and invest the necessary time, space, and money into its care, so no worries—this isn’t an impulse decision.
Honestly, I’d recommend getting some rats—they make fantastic bonding pets. Plus, you can train them, which adds an extra layer of fun. The only downside, in my opinion, is their short lifespan, but if you’re okay with that, I’d definitely suggest these little cuties.
I’ve actually had rats on three different occasions, but their 1.5 to 2-year lifespan is really hard for me to handle.
I have woodchucks, and I adore them. I recently lost my female about a week ago, and I miss her so much. I plan to get another female next year, and I know I’ll have woodchucks for the rest of my life. If you’re thinking about getting a prairie dog, make sure to research how they’re obtained. Some methods are inhumane, like using suction to remove them from their burrows, which can cause internal injuries. If you do go for a prairie dog, there’s a great Facebook group called “PD Parents” where you’ll find amazing advice and support.
Maybe consider a ferret? They’re adorable and full of mischief. They have tons of energy, so you’ll definitely need to ferret-proof your home.
I adore my short-tailed opossum, though she’s mostly active at night. However, she can’t resist coming out of her enclosure whenever I offer her superworms.
