I’m looking for guidance on what I need to do to open a petting zoo in Ontario. The laws here seem pretty relaxed, and there isn’t much information available. My goal is to go through the right channels so I can eventually open a sanctuary for non-dangerous exotic animals that were mistreated and wrongfully brought here. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!
I don’t know about Ontario, but in the US, we contact the Department of Agriculture to get a Class C Exhibitor’s permit (I’m working on my property to apply for one). This is the only way my state lets me keep foxes and big cats. I would suggest contacting your local Agriculture or Fish and Game Department in Ontario – they should have something similar to what we have here and can help you with the process.

The usual requirements for a Class C permit can vary by state, but there are some common rules. You must have a barrier around carnivore enclosures to prevent people from getting too close, and food must be labeled with packaging dates and kept separate from human food. Some states require ice bottles when temperatures rise above a certain level. Cages must have proper drainage, and there must be an escape protocol. If Ontario has a Class C equivalent, you’ll probably need to follow similar guidelines.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ll be sure to reach out to the local departments.
