What You Should Know Before Owning an Exotic Animal

For those of you who have never owned an exotic animal, here are some tips to help you understand the process and the consequences.

I currently have a woodchuck and am hoping to get babies in the spring. I’m posting this to give you a heads up on what you might face.

  1. Read up on the exotic animals you’re interested in.

  2. Know the specific requirements for owning one. Different animals have different needs.

  3. Research breeders. They must be licensed in your state, and the breed must be legal in your state. Don’t skip this step.

  4. If you own an exotic illegally, you can face fines in the thousands. The animal may also be confiscated and put down.

  5. Male exotics can go through something like rut when they’re sexually mature. This can make them extremely aggressive.

  6. Know when your animal will need to be fixed.

  7. You’ll need an exotic vet, which can be expensive. Be aware that vets will ask for legal documentation upfront, and they are required to report if you don’t have it.

  8. If the breed is considered dangerous, you may not be able to own it, depending on your state. But if you can, you will be held responsible if the animal hurts or kills someone.

  9. Don’t assume any animal is legal. Some breeds you might expect to be legal might surprise you.

  10. Native breeds might be easier to keep, but don’t assume anything.

  11. Make sure you understand their food and housing requirements.

  12. Exotic animals bond when they’re babies, so if you decide you don’t want the animal, it’s likely that it won’t bond to anyone else.

  13. For example, prairie dogs are a great pet, and the Facebook group ‘Prairie Dog Parents’ is a helpful resource. They give great advice and can tell you where to get prairie dogs safely. Most prairie dogs come from humane traps or vacuum trucks, but the process can be painful and dangerous for them.

Hopefully, this helps some of you out there.

First of all, it’s species, not breed.

This seems like some odd advice that might be useful for a teenager or someone who’s never had a pet before… but most of what you’re saying is just common sense for any responsible adult.

It might help people who think owning exotic animals is easy or something they can try on a whim, but I’m sure most adults would already know these things.

@Joss
No, I’ve seen some crazy things people do.
It might seem obvious, but I’ve heard people complain because their pets were taken away because they were illegal. It’s basic stuff, but a lot of people still mess up.
If you don’t need the info, that’s fine, but it’s important to share it for others who don’t know.
