Hi everyone, I’m 14 and looking to get my first snake. I’ve never owned one before, and I’m trying to decide between a bull snake and a ball python. I have a 48 x 24 x 20.5 inch tank ready. My mom says it has to eat frozen-thawed food. Which one would you recommend for a beginner?
I have a ball python, and I love her. She’s super calm and likes hanging out with us. I think they make awesome pets.
I’d recommend a ball python for sure. They’re really great, and even my 7-year-old can handle them without any issues. I had one myself when I was 9, and they’re so easy to tame even if they’re a little aggressive at first.
I’m not the biggest fan of ball pythons, so I’d say go for a bull snake. They get bigger, but your enclosure should work for a long time. My bull snake was super chill—great snakes to have.

Thanks for the advice!

Have you checked out other snakes in the same group as bulls, like pine or gopher snakes?

Yeah, I looked into them, but I like bull snakes the most. I’ve watched a few videos, and people seem to really enjoy having them.

That’s great! Just wanted to make sure you explored all your options. Bull snakes are definitely one of my favorites too.
I’ve had my ball python for five years, and she’s been such a sweetheart. They’re really easy to care for and make great pets.
Ball pythons are great, but keep in mind they sometimes refuse food more often than bull snakes, and you need to get their care just right.
