Considering Adopting a Sugar Glider

I’m thinking about adopting a sugar glider and have quite a few questions to start with.

First off, what is the initial one-time cost I should expect, including the cage and other supplies? Also, what are the ongoing monthly expenses? I’d prefer the costs in CAD, but if that’s too much trouble, please just let me know the currency you’re using.

Next, I’m wondering if my lifestyle would be suitable for a sugar glider. I’m a high school student, and on some days, I have hockey practice that keeps me out until 10:30 or 11 PM. I’m generally free during the summer. When it comes to vacations, how do sugar gliders handle being alone? Would they need someone to check in on them for a weekend or even a week?

Lastly, I live in Calgary, Alberta. Are there any reputable breeders in my area that you would recommend?

Welcome! For the initial cost, you might be looking at around $200 to $500 CAD for the sugar glider, plus another $100 to $300 for a good cage and supplies. Monthly expenses can vary but usually range from $30 to $60 for food and bedding.

As for your lifestyle, sugar gliders are pretty social, so having a later schedule might be a challenge. They tend to be more active at night, so you might want to adjust your routine a bit. Regarding vacations, it’s generally recommended to have someone check on them if you’re gone for more than a day or two.

In Calgary, I don’t have specific breeder names, but I’d suggest checking local exotic pet shops or animal rescues. They often have reliable connections or even sugar gliders up for adoption!

For the summer, you’ll likely have more time for bonding, which is great. Just remember that sugar gliders thrive on interaction and mental stimulation, so consider setting aside some time each day for them.
