Got some questions about Praying Mantis as pets… anyone know more?

Hello! I’ve been thinking about getting a pet praying mantis (the Asian type, I can’t remember the name right now) and I have a few questions. My mom has 5 jumping spiders so she can probably help me with some things, but I thought I’d ask this forum for more advice from everyone!

1- What should go in a praying mantis enclosure? Anything that definitely shouldn’t be in there? I know jumping spiders can have a lot of flexibility with their enclosures, but I want to make a nature-type setup for the mantis. Is there a specific size for the enclosure or can I just use whatever I find as long as it’s big enough for it to live in?

2- How much do they usually cost to buy? My mom knows someone with pet mantises, so she might help me out, but I’m still curious.

3- What do they eat, and how much should I feed them? I’ve heard they eat crickets, fruit flies, etc., but I want to be sure.

4- How long do they typically live, and do they need a buddy or should I keep just one for now (especially since I’m a beginner)?

Any other tips or advice would be really appreciated! I’ll be researching more tonight and will talk to my mom tomorrow. Thanks! :slight_smile:

A lot of your questions depend on the type of praying mantis you’re getting. Some mantises can be kept together because they’re more social, while others need to be kept alone. Their diet also changes a lot depending on the species, like European versus Asian mantises. Are you looking for a local native mantis, or are you planning to buy one from a breeder?

Let me know a bit more, and I can give you better advice!

@Luca
I’m planning to get one from a breeder! I think I’m aiming for the classic neon green mantis (I believe that’s the Asian one, but I’m so tired right now, I can’t remember the full name). :sweat_smile:
