Thinking about getting a fennec fox as a pet… but is it a good idea?

I’ve found a few places online like underground reptiles that seem reliable, but I’m wondering if anyone here knows of any breeders or if you’ve had experience with fennec foxes? Also, do they even make good pets? Would love to hear any advice or experiences.

A friend of mine had a rescue fennec for a few years. Adorable, but the reality was tough—up all night making loud noises and the smell of his pee… let’s just say it’s unforgettable in the worst way. Unless you’re really ready for it, I’d say think carefully before getting a fennec!

From what I’ve heard, having a fox as a pet can be intense! They scream a lot, and even though you can try litterbox training, they’ll still mark their territory with pee everywhere. Be prepared for your house to smell. They can also be pretty destructive and need an outdoor area. And don’t even think about leaving for a vacation unless you find someone crazy enough to fox-sit for you!

Honestly, before even considering getting a fox, do your research. No fox really makes a “good pet.” It’s a whole lifestyle change.

First, check if they’re even legal to own where you live. Then, make sure you have at least two nearby vets willing to treat a fennec. After that, dive deep into everything about their care—diet, space, noise, smell, how they can destroy things, their lifespan, special health needs… it’s a lot!

Only after you’ve prepped your home (or built an outdoor area), then you can start looking around to actually get one. And consider rescue options too! Many exotic animals are given up because their owners didn’t prepare enough beforehand.

Good luck with your search! Hope it works out :sparkling_heart:

I follow a lot of fox owners online, and pretty much all of them say foxes can’t be fully house-trained. Just something to think about.

Yep, absolutely true. I work in exotic animal rescue and know a few people who handle fox rescues. Foxes are wonderful, but honestly, I don’t think I’d want one myself given the noise, destruction, and constant marking… and by marking, I mean they will poop and pee on pretty much everything—counters, couches, food, other pets, and even people . They’re definitely not a typical ‘pet’ and keeping one indoors is a big, big adjustment.
